# Editing an Order

> Add margin to move your liquidation price, add to a long or short, or change your take profit and stop loss. Open the position from Portfolio to see every option.

Open any position from **Portfolio**. The position screen charts the market with your **entry**, the **current** price, any **stop loss** or **take profit**, and your **liquidation** price marked as lines, so you can see at a glance how much room the trade has. Below the chart, **My Position** shows your live profit and position value. Tap **Modify** to see four options: **Add TP / SL**, **Add margin**, **Add to Long** (or **Add to Short**), and **Reverse**.

## Add margin

Adding margin puts more USDC behind the position without changing its size. It gives the trade more padding against liquidation: on a long, the liquidation price drops; on a short, it rises.

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open the position">
    From **Portfolio**, tap the position.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Tap Modify, then Add margin">
    Enter the amount of USDC to add from your available balance.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Confirm">
    The new liquidation price is shown before you confirm.
  </Step>
</Steps>

Alpha uses **isolated margin**, which means:

* Each position has its own margin. Adding margin to one position does not affect any other.
* If a position is liquidated, you lose only the margin assigned to that position.
* Margin can be added to an open position but not removed. To take margin out, close or partially close the position.
* Your effective leverage is position size divided by margin, so adding margin lowers it.

<Tip>
  Adding margin is the same as trading at lower leverage. If you find yourself adding margin often, consider opening the next trade at a lower multiplier instead.
</Tip>

## Add to a long or short

You can increase the size of an open position in the same direction.

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open the position">
    From **Portfolio**, tap the position.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Tap Modify, then Add to Long or Add to Short">
    Enter the additional margin. The new size is added at the position's existing leverage.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Confirm">
    The order fills at the current market price, and your entry price becomes the weighted average of the two entries.
  </Step>
</Steps>

**Leverage stays the same as the original position.** If you opened a BTC long at 10x, any additional BTC long you add is also at 10x. To trade the same market at a different leverage, close the position first and reopen it.

**Your entry price changes.** Adding \$500 at \$110 to a \$500 position opened at \$100 gives you a \$1,000 position with a \$105 average entry. Your liquidation price is recalculated and shown before you confirm.

## Add or change take profit and stop loss

From the position screen, tap **Modify**, then **Add TP / SL**. You can:

* Add a take profit or stop loss to a position that has none
* Move an existing level up or down
* Remove a level entirely

Changes take effect immediately. Take profit and stop loss trigger on the mark price and close the position at market.

## What you cannot edit

* **Entry price.** It is set when the order fills. Adding to the position changes the average, not the original fill.
* **Direction.** Use **Reverse** to flip a position. See [Closing an order](/get-started/closing-an-order).
* **Margin, downward.** You can add margin but not withdraw it from an open position. Close part of the position to free some up.
* **Leverage, upward.** Since margin cannot be removed, leverage can only go down (by adding margin) while a position is open. To trade at higher leverage, close and reopen.
